A Little About Me
I have a long history of being thrifty, whether I’ve needed to be or not. I love calculating every last cent I’ve spent on a recipe or project and sharing the results with people! Some people say that’s a Midwestern trait to share where you got something and how much you paid for it, but I say it’s offering help and ideas for people in all types of financial situations.
My general thought about money is this: whether you are going through a hard time or not, you should choose to spend what you have wisely. There should always be a goal at the end of the day.
For me, my goal is to reach financial independence while still making delicious meals and following through with all those upgrades that I’ve been wanting to do around the house. This takes quite a bit of discipline to distinguish between a need and a want.
For example, we need to eat (obviously) and pay bills, but I also want to do all those gorgeous home upgrades that you see on Pinterest. By shopping at budget friendly grocery stores and thrift shops, I can manage to do both while still tucking a little money away for the future – and I think that is the perfect balance!
The Family
My husband and I are the proud parents of wild and crazy twins…. who just happen to be in the toddler stage. So much fun! And so, so very, tiring at the same time. I am always looking for things to keep them entertained and keep their little minds growing.
How to be Thrifty
It takes a little trial and error to decide what works best for you. I suggest breaking out of your shell and visiting a few stores around town that you might not have given a chance before. I used to only shop at one particular grocery store and dreaded it (even though I LOVE grocery shopping) because I felt like I got so little for so much money. Now? I drive the extra few miles to visit more budget friendly stores and end up getting way more for WAY less with no loss in quality.
I also got real with myself and decided to make purchases only if I really needed it. That means no buying a new phone if the one I have works, no trips to the mall because I’m bored and no other random purchases unless they were carefully thought out. In fact, it’s a joke with my friends that I once put back a 25 cent change jar to hang in the laundry room. To them, it was only a quarter. To me, it was conscious decision making. I didn’t need it. It was just something else to take up space. And…. at the end of the day, I saved a quarter. Every penny counts!
