Mushroom Turkey Burgers

Mushroom Turkey Burgers are an excellent way to sneak in extra veggies. At least, that’s why I added them since I have some picky eaters in the house. The flavor ended up being so amazing that I can’t imagine I will make them any other way now!

We typically have beef burgers, however we have recently switched to limited red meats. Ground turkey can sometimes have a bad reputation for being bland, but I look at it as a blank canvas and it is a great way to experiment with added veggies and spices.

I had a container of baby bella mushrooms in the refrigerator that I knew I needed to use up soon, so I figured why not dice them up and add them to the meat mixture. Mushrooms are a common base for veggie burgers, so I knew the texture would work well. But the result was better than I could have expected! As an added bonus, the extra mushrooms bulked up the meat mixture so we ended up getting an extra burger out of it than we normally would have with just meat only. I’m all in favor of that!

The Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 lb baby bella mushrooms (I am sure other types will work)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
  • 1 T steak seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon worchestershire sauce

To start, wash and dry the baby bella mushrooms and finely dice them. I found this easy with a knife, but you could pulse them in a food processor just as easily. Once they are very finely diced, mix them with the ground turkey and spices.

After mixing, form them into patties. I made 5 patties, but if you like larger patties you may want to make 4. One thing I’d like to note is that ground turkey does not hold as firm of a shape as ground beef does. Because of this, I tend to form them into thicker discs and then flatten them out with a spatula while they are in the pan.

To Cook

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Once the skillet is ready, add a little bit of olive oil or cooking spray. Place your patties in the skillet and press down firmly with the back of a spatula to flatten out. Cook for 5 minutes, flip, and then cook for another 4-5 minutes. Once done, you’ll have the best tasting burger you have had in a long time! The edges come out perfectly crispy and the moisture of the mushrooms leaves you with a juicy burger.

I like to serve these on toasted buns with a little bit of barbeque sauce, but any toppings will work with this flavor.

Add Ins

Mushroom turkey burgers are loaded with lean meat, veggies and vitamins. To up the benefits, you could also add in a little bit of flax seed, grated onion, diced peppers or even chopped spinach. Like I said earlier, ground turkey is a blank canvas so you can have a great time experimenting with flavors.
